Annual Report

2024-25

Just like our vision for York House School, we see our students as they are and imagine what they could be: future-ready leaders with the essential knowledge and skills needed to confidently navigate the complexities of modern life. This is the heart of the Spark strategic plan.

In only 18 months since launch, we are thrilled to see the progress made so far. Our people, program, and places are transforming our student’s academic experience and preparing them for a future where uncertainty is the only constant. Thank you for the role you play in this important work.

We invite you to read the progress we made last year in this 2024-25 Annual Report. The best part? We are just getting started.

Sincerely,

Deryn Lavell, Head of School
Joanne Lee-Young ‘90, Chair, YHS Board of Governors
Margot Keate West ‘93, Chair, YHS Foundation

Creating Future-Ready Students

Equipped with self-awareness, agency, collaboration, curiosity, empathy, and resilience, our students are gaining the essential skills to navigate the complexities of modern life with confidence.

Human Capital and Unconventional Expertise

  • We’ve updated our hiring practices to ensure new staff and faculty understand and support our mission, vision, and values.
  • Our faculty and staff are engaged in targeted professional development in areas such as civil discourse, pluralism, artificial intelligence, and neurodivergent thinking and learning, all directly related to ensuring academic excellence in our transformative program.
  • Faculty are presenting at educational conferences, such as the International Coalition of Girls Schools, Vancouver Reggio Association, and Independent Schools of BC.
  • Our students and teachers are learning from visiting Elders from local Indigenous communities.
  • Utilizing our worldwide alum connections and our talented parents and guardians, our students gain exposure to a vast array of experts in a variety of professions.
  • Guest speakers brought external expertise to our community, including Dr. Lisa Damour, Kory Wilson, Dr. Sherry Chan, Dr. Raj Dhasi, Angela Marie MacDougall, and more.

Transformational Program

  • With input from faculty, we developed a Transformational Program Promise to articulate how we deliver an excellent and rigorous academic program.
  • Our new Dean of Academic Excellence is working with our Principals and their teams to ensure creativity and academic excellence includes critical life skills.
  • We’re moving the classroom outside for more authentic and real-world learning. This includes service learning enterprises such as Vancouver Food Runners, where our students, faculty, and staff pick up otherwise discarded groceries and distribute them to those in need.
  • Our Senior School educational travel opportunities have been specifically redesigned to promote interdisciplinary learning across subject areas, emphasize ongoing and meaningful partnerships with communities, and place an emphasis on our motto, Not for Ourselves Alone.
  • We are informed by research and our comprehensive data analysis for student improvement and well-being and belonging. The use of Challenge Success (Stanford) and the Middle Years Development Instrument (UBC) provides information to continually improve and inform our program delivery.
  • We’re making sure our academic foundations are strong year over year in literacy through instruments such as the UFLI Literacy Institute and the DIBELS Zones of Growth. Both are highly informative external assessments to ensure our high standards of academic excellence.
  • Changed Little and Junior School schedule to build time for faculty collaboration and interdisciplinary work, particularly when integrating science, technology, and art.
  • We expanded our Senior School course offering by adding Entrepreneurship and Engineering courses, as well as providing more than 20+ new courses through a partnership with Global Online Academy

Scores of level 3 and above may qualify for university course credits

  • Number of AP students has increased by 23.4% since 2023
  • Number of students with an exam scoring at 3 or above has increased by 6% since 2022
  • Five-year rolling average for the percentage of AP students with scores 3+ is 90.6%
  • Number of AP scholars with honours increased by seven students between 2024 and 2025
  • One student received the AP Capstone Diploma in 2025

AP Scores 3+

Every year, students in Grades 4 and 7 write the Foundational Student Assessment (FSA) in literacy and numeracy. The FSA is a learning assessment focusing on the areas of literacy and numeracy, and assesses how students think, communicate, and reflect on their learning.

Scores for Grades 4 and 7 far exceed the province and public’s scores.

Grade 4 students performed exceptionally well, with all students meeting or exceeding expectations in both areas, well above provincial and public school trends.

Grade 7 results demonstrate strong achievement, with all students on track or extending in literacy and the vast majority doing so in numeracy. These outcomes remain notably higher than both provincial and public benchmarks.

Compared to other independent schools in BC, YHS continues to perform at a higher level across all areas and grade levels.

Dynamic Future

  • Our Junior School has been transformed top to bottom to ensure facilities are well equipped to enhance program demands through improved lighting, enlarged classroom spaces, special learning hubs, a new Student Success Centre, and beautiful performing and visual arts spaces, including an Arts Atelier, and our Innovation Hub.
  • We are constantly reviewing ways to ensure sustainability in our heating and cooling, lighting, waste management and, most importantly, in our student learning through environmental learning opportunities.
  • A new main campus running track has been added to support Athletics and Physical Health Education classes.
  • We launched a refreshed brand identity, website, and school magazine designed to attract diverse students and faculty from all over Vancouver and to communicate our unique approach to teaching and learning.
  • The future can’t wait, and our new robotics equipment makes sure our students have access to innovative approaches and design-thinking opportunities.
  • Our Little School has a beautiful new garden for outdoor learning and play, and a fully refreshed interior thanks to calm new colours throughout.
For me, community means friendship, love, and connecting with not only peers and teachers, but also the planet. Without the loving, tight-knit community here at YHS, I definitely wouldn't feel at home. All the people in this building are my family, and always will be.
